Fleshmarket Close

(c) John Arthur

Edgar. Ainslie. Kirkwood. Kerr. Shown as Provost’s Close, o.& n.e. ii. 277. There were three closes leading down to the Fleshmarket. The west most seems always to have been known as the Fleshmarket Close, I. Lawson’s Gazetteer, quoted in o.& n.e. 277, speaks of it as form the Provost’s Close, from the official residence of the provost. This lacks confirmation.
