An ancient Signal Tower in Tolbooth Wynd

Near to the top of the Old Tolbooth Wynd an ancient signal Tower once stood and can be seen in an old engraving below.

It was furnished with little port holes at the top resembling those used for muskets in the past and can be seen in the old Border peel towers and fortalices. Unfortunately not much is known about the building but it may have been a look out tower for watching for merchant ships entering the harbour. It is possible that the structure predates the Mylne Signal Tower of 1685 which possibly replaced the lookout Tower in Tolbooth Wynd.

Scottish lawmakers urged to posthumously pardon ‘witches’

One petition, signed online by 206 people, calls for members of the Scottish Parliament (MSPs) to urge the executive in Edinburgh to appeal to Britain’s interior minister to reconsider a previous refusal to pardon Helen Duncan. for more click here

STS. JOHN DAYS. June 24- December 27

By history, custom, tradition and ritualistic requirements, the Craft holds dear the days of St. John the Baptist on June 24, and St. John the Evangelist on December 27. A lodge which forgets either forfeits a precious link with the past and loses an opportunity for the renewal of allegiance to everything in Freemasonry symbolized by these Patron Saints. No satisfactory explanation has as yet been advanced to explain why operative Masons adopted two Christian saints, when St. Thomas, the patron of architecture and building, was available. for more click here
