The St John metioned in “The Altar of St John” was John the Baptist and one of his symbols was a Shell in the same way a shell was brought back by the Leith pilgrims in the Middle Ages to prove they had completed there pilgrimage to Compostella in Spain. St John is here seen pointing to the Cross of the Knights of St John Hospitaller who first founded the Preceptory of St Anthony in Leith in 1327.
