A Short History of Portobello
Passing through Portobello you would be unlikely to see the Figgate Burn. This little trickle of water is one of the reminders of Portobello’s past. Before the town grew up there was just wind blown wild grass scattered amongst the sands down by the coast outside Edinburgh. Here the monks from Holyrood Abbey would let their cattle graze. Figgate means “cattle pasture” in Saxon. for more click here
