Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

SIR Arthur Conan Doyle is best remembered as the creator of Sherlock Holmes and his kind friend Dr John Watson. Born in Edinburgh to Irish parents, he was educated at Stonyhurst and in Germany and studied medicine at Edinburgh University.

He was encouraged to become an author after experiencing poverty as a young practitioner in South Sea and as an oculist in London. A Study in Scarlet introduced the prototype that was to become the now world-famous Sherlock Holmes character. The Strand Magazine serialised the Adventures Of Sherlock Holmes between 1891 and 1893 and they were published as books under titles such as The Sign of Four (1890) and, more notably, The Hound of the Baskervilles in 1902. for more click here
