The Story of the S.S. Coblenz

During the First World War on the homeward voyage from Italy the Leith Ship Coblenz under the command of Capt Henry Speed came under attack by an German submarine. However after a battle which lasted two hours and the Leith ship only armed with a small calibre gun the submarine decided to submerge and escaped.
The Leith ship sustained damage and had a unexploded bomb in the coal bunker. Further a passenger was killed and a seaman had his leg amputated
