Holbein was the most important artist ever to work in Britain. It’s that simple. When he arrived here from Basel in the autumn of 1526, he encountered a country that was timidly edging its way out of the Middle Ages. Artistically and intellectually, England was the Romania of the Renaissance. Holbein changed all that single-handedly.
