The Jougs
The Jougs of South Leith Church was use to punish minor offences such as swearing and drunkeness. It wasn’t meant to inflict pain only embarrassment as the person was chained to the Church wall for twenty-four hours and fed bread and water and to be made the object of derision for people passing by.
