Melrose Abbey and Leith

Melrose Abbey 1866
Up to 1296 all the wool from the Abbey’s of Melrose and Kelso were exported ro the Low Countries through Berwick. However in 1296 this trade ended with the destruction of Berwick by Edward I. The trade was then transfered from Berwick to Leith. In fact Melrose Abbey owned property in Leith and it hs been recently discovered that Kelso Abbey owned half of Arthur Seat in Edinburgh.
