The Edinburgh Trades

Trade incorporations and merchant guilds started to appear in the Twelfth and Thirteenth centuries. Groups of people involved in the same trade banded together, having discovered the benefits of mutual support. In Scotland the organisation of craftsmen into incorporations took place in the Fifteenth and Sixteenth centuries, although the craftsmen had been grouped together informally prior to this date.
