The statue which stands in Civic Square just in front of the Library commemorates a resolute woman called Jackie Crookston. She joined a protest march through the streets in 1797 when the government introduced a form of compulsory military service. Soldiers were called in to restore order and killed twelve people, including Jackie, in the ensuing riot. for more click here
