The Incorporation of Coopers in Leith
Leith, situated just over a mile from Edinburgh, is likely to have been a port from early times. Coopers would therefore have been in demand to make and repair barrels, used for the packing of many types of goods. Although no evidence survives, it is likely that Leith became a burgh of barony in 1398. Among other privileges, it was entitled to have trade incorporations.
