The Ancient Town of Leith

William McGonagal (1825-1902) became a well known figure in the 19th century giving public readings of his poetry. His combination of irrelevance, odd rhymes and confused scansion have earned him the title of “the world’s worst poet”. Despite that he is viewed with affection – and some degree of amusement!
