Mark of Poverty


This child has been disfigured by rickets once common in Leith in the 19th and early 20th century. This was caused by a poor diet and vitamin D deficiency. Much of the work on this was done at Edinburgh and Glasgow University and led to milk being given to children at school which gradually made the disease unknown in Scotland.
