Close encounter of the lost kind
IT has been described as Edinburghs forgotten gem, its homes abandoned by their owners more than 100 years ago when the area became overrun by disease.
Byres Close, which in its 17th-century heyday boasted some of the finest properties in the city, has been left to decay, out of public view, since the 1860s.
