Journey to the Trossachs
JULES VERNE, OFTEN REGARDED AS THE father of science fiction, died a century ago on 24 March. At the mention of the French novelist’s name we immediately think of his “voyages extraordinaires” and their enduring, sometimes brilliantly prophetic, legacy of Victorian submarines, heavier-than-air flying machines, antediluvian monsters at the centre of the Earth and frock-coated, top-hatted space explorers … but a subterranean city under the Trossachs?
